The Chevron and the 70's

The "CHIC" chevron  is a really just a new take
on a few angles of the 70's Peace sign.

The fact that its coming in waves of aqua/teal is what makes it unique to this century.

Putting the Chevron in its historical context (for real) is timely.
Ken Noland, born April, 1924 in Asheville, NC, made the Chevron an iconic symbol
of the late 60's early 70's.

Take a peek at this gorgeous exhibit in Chelsea in April of 2011.
Art, design and fashion all come together in so many ways
but orange, brown and peace signs are all pretty retro - in a good way -
like a sliding your toes around in a nice shag rug.

If you know the tune to
The Circle Game  Joni Mitchell, 1970
you might just be a Gen- X

Looking at this exhibit takes me back to when I was living in NYC, directing a gallery and living in SOHO. Might be time for a road trip. Too bad I don't have a VW Bug.

The headless model in the Chevron dress above makes me think of another classic- The Stepford Wives (circa '72) but that's another story.

Troubling Trend

Is Our Awesome 20-teens Aqua/Teal
the New Played 70's Avocado Green?

It hit me when I walked into Home Depot yesterday and took a good look at the outdoor patio furniture

Aqua/Teal.

It's on the cover of Martha Stewart's paint deck.

it's here.

it's there

it's everywhere.

If  it has

Martha Stewart's

                  name on it...  it's

     Main Stream.

Now that it's hip again

I'm pulling out the copper.

(Above and at left) are a few of pieces I have kicking
around the house. I  have about 20 or so. Copper can
vary from bright & shiny (when new or polished) to the
cool aqua "verdigris" on the right. You can get the blue
look by leaving it out in the rain, in the garage or by a
chemical process but "it's extra" if you buy that way..

turns out a large oval copper tub (above)
like the one I've  been using to keep my
outdoor hose coiled up in costs about $90
new at Plow and Hearth. I'm upcycling
mine to the new recycling bin in my office.

One of my favorities (above left) is antique container for fireplace ashes,  the one (above right) polished up  for sale on Ebay is too. I use mine as an awesome planter. I could by a much smaller one for about $50 within 21 hours... but collecting the real deal is much more rewarding.

Whether shiny bright copper is hiding behind a patina of tarnished brown is hard to know. A quick rub with a nail file should expose a glimmer of it. You can see how tarnished copper can get by comparing the finishes on the same piece above on the left and right.
